- Ph.D Course


"Improve your funding and research impact with entrepreneurial methods" is being offered by the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University.

Criteria for participation

Master’s degree, all fields apply, and/or postgraduate research fellows (PhD students and research-year medical students). Current PhD students or research-year students who have a complete PhD/RY project protocol. It is essential for the course that the content and the prerequisites for the study can be shared in plenum. 

Aim of the course

Complexity and the pace of changes in society is increasing constantly. This demands for interdisciplinary work skills. This course will teach PhD students to use a methodology that sprung out of the start-up environment and now taught at NSF, Berkley, Stanford and many universities around the world. The purpose is to provide an eye-opener for the value of interdisciplinary project management as a way to leverage results to provide value for stakeholders. The course will increase the PhD students’ ability to identify and increase the societal value of their research and thereby increase to possibility of raising more funding.

  • Methodology to reach out to other proficiencies and build interdisciplinary network
  • Ability to review and adapt a research project to be more applied and direct on need and societal value

  • Knowledge about business model components
  • Improvement of communication skills in oral and writing to better emphasize the need and value of own research for society


The Business Model Canvas (BMC) will be used for review and clarification of the value creation of the individual PhD studies. Students will gain insight into what value is, from various users and beneficiaries of their research and they will learn how to use BMC as a project management tool and as a tool to increase the value and relevance of their work. Course participants will be trained to examine the relevance and need for their research and then modify and innovate to add value to their work. We will also focus on value-based presentation of the participants' specific projects with the aim of optimizing the key message for use in grant applications and scientific communication.

Interdisciplinarity will be demonstrated and trained through group work on fellow students’ projects and field work assignments. 

Practical information

Preparation: There will be homework and field studies between the modules. Pre-course preparation e-learning based on the work of Steve Blank are listed on Black Board. There will be given a BMC to be prepared for the first module.
